Harewood House – Useful/Beautiful: Why Craft Matters

We have an exhibition here at Harewood House – Useful/Beautiful: Why Craft Matters – curated by design curator and writer, Hugo McDonald.  This is a pioneering contemporary craft exhibition, which responds to the heritage setting and challenges our preconceptions of craft and the role it plays in culture and society.  To accompany the exhibition, we have a full-day symposium on Friday 17 May, 10 – 4pm where expert speakers, academics, industry professionals and makers will explore some of the questions raised in the exhibition, such as:

  • What values are inherent in craft and why is craft more than just making?
  • How important is craft for community, our sense of identity and how we choose to live?
  • How can craft be commercially viable whilst maintaining its integrity and values?
  • To what extent is the resurgence in craft a response to our digital lives and innate need to connect with the physical realm?
  • In the bicentenary year of Ruskin, how can craft answer 21st Century social and political issues?
  • How can craft move from the margins to the mainstream in terms of offering a sustainable business model?
  • How can craft help us shape our futures?

The day will comprise of debate, presentations and  panel discussions.  This is a lively event for anyone interested in contemporary craft and society, from craft and design professionals, artists and makers to students and academics.

Please find attached the itinerary and here are links to the programme and how to book.  We are able to issue one free adult/group leader ticket per group booking of 20 students.
