All ARE WELCOME!

On the 15 October we will be watching ‘Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears’ (Moskva slezam ne verit), a 1980 Soviet melodrama directed by Vladimir Menshov, with English subtitles.

The screening will be followed by a wine reception and an informal discussion moderated by Adelaide McGinity-Peebles, a PhD student in Russian Studies at the University of Manchester. You are welcome to join our discussion about women in power and how far feminism Soviet style could go at that time.

Plot:

Three young women, Katerina, Lyudmila, and Antonina, who came to Moscow from smaller towns, pretend to be the daughters of Katerina’s uncle, a well-to-do professor, in order to meet affluent men.
Runtime: 140 min.

You will:

  • learn how to use the Russian biggest national library beyond its intended purpose.
  • learn about the future prospects of country bumpkins in Moscow in the 1950s.
  • watch the movie that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1981
  • learn what it feels like to be the executive director of a large factory and date a working-class man.
