Dear SALC PhD students,

For those who don’t know, the SSS week comprises public events in the evenings and seminars for up to 40 registered postgraduates each day for 5 days.  For more information on our public events,

Most of the public events are free, but to attend the daytime workshops, you will need to pay a registration fee (£150) and send in a short statement to explain how the Summer School relates to your research interests and how you think it will benefit you. This registration fee will cover entry fees to all the public events, the opening buffet, as well as lunch and wine receptions on most days during the week.

Registration will go live on Monday 17th February 2020 through the University of Manchester’s online estore. Further details on how to register, including the link for the estore page, will be made available through our mailing list, on our blog and on our social media closer to the date.
If you require funding to enable you to attend, you may need to secure this funding before you register.

It is your responsibility to research any funding deadlines, how to apply, and how long it will take to find out the outcome of the funding competitions.

We have done some preliminary research for you on a few options:

  • For all postgraduate students funded by a research council, please contact your funding body to ask what funds they have available.
  • For University of Manchester PhD Students in SALC, there is conference funding available. More details on how to apply
  • For other University of Manchester Master’s and PhD students, please get in touch with the PGT or PGR director for your School to find out what funding is available.
  • For postgraduate students at other institutions, please speak to your home institution (your supervisor or programme director) about what funding is available. You may also want to check out The Alternative Postgraduate Funding Guide.

The Sexuality Summer School is an excellent opportunity to discuss your ideas for your dissertation or thesis with others engaged in the field of Sexuality Studies, as well as to consider options for future research at PhD level and beyond. The week’s events will offer the chance to examine current debates in queer and feminist theory through the work of renowned scholars, creative practitioners and activists.

Moreover, the Sexuality Summer School functions as a model for public engagement, using public lectures, Q&As, performances and film screenings to open up these conversations to Manchester’s LGBT community. As a result, we hope our attendees will imagine other possibilities to bring their research and ideas to different audiences.

The week’s events will bring together students and researchers engaged in this area of study from across various disciplines and across the world. Previous attendees have continued to support each others’ research and professional development, forming reading groups and research networks, and receiving invitations to speak at future events.

We hope to see many of you at the Sexuality Summer School, whether as a registered delegate or at our public events!
