Tuesday 23 February, 5-7pm: James Heartfield (Independent Researcher), ‘Covid-19 and the Medicalization of Social Life’

Abstract

Social theorist Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben and Deborah Lupton developed extensive critiques of the medicalisation of social life, which enjoyed significant influence in the social sciences. But despite being armed with these critiques, the theorisation of the Covid-19 pandemic as a mode of biopolitics has been strangely muted. How can we theorise the present juncture?
