Such a programme may require:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transitioning to fast reactor technology.<\/li>\n<li>An understanding of fuel cycle options for new reactors\/fuels.<\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph ng-attr-widget\">Management options to reduce pressures on spent fuel storage &amp; disposal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these requirements necessitate an assessment of advanced spent nuclear fuel technologies to support an expanded civil nuclear energy programme.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Other benefits for recycling spent nuclear fuel<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Recycling makes best use of uranium resources.<\/li>\n<li>International opportunities with &gt;500 kte of spent fuel in storage by 2050.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain skills &amp; develop next generation SMEs.<\/li>\n<li>Spin-out applications, e.g. Am-241 for space batteries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The need to develop advanced recycling technologies<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve proliferation resistance by controlling the plutonium inventory.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce heat loading in the geological disposal facility.<\/li>\n<li>Maximise the use of available resources.<\/li>\n<li>Improve sustainability (environmental and financial).<\/li>\n<li>Improve operational safety.<\/li>\n<li>Increase public acceptability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_cta title=&#8221;Contact us&#8221;
