On 9 October Dr Susanna Ivanic<\/strong> from the University of Kent will present in the History Departmental Seminar on \u2018Objects and Environments in Early Modern Central Europe.\u2019 The seminar will take place in Roscoe 2.3 at 13:00\u00a0<\/strong>and all Collective members are welcome to attend!<\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong> Central Europe offers a unique perspective on early modern transcultural history. Distinctive among geographies considered in global histories, Central Europe foregrounds land connections involving multiple borderlands, communities, and empires. It encompasses multiethnic and multilingual entities, and\u2014often due to its valuable resources\u2014highly fluid political, religious, and cultural environments. Material culture \u2013 particularly the production of artefacts \u2013 facilitated connections across and beyond this vast region. This paper will examine how deep object biography extending to the environment and museological practice can reorient Central Europe\u2019s place in history. At the centre of the study are chalcedony objects from Rudolf II\u2019s\u00a0Kunstkammer<\/em>\u00a0in Prague, 1576-1612.<\/p>\n
