Community Elective

The Elective offers students the chance to see and participate in a field of medicine they have a special interest in.

With this in mind, we have created an exciting new opportunity for students to spend their time on elective in general practice in the UK.

Community Electives are an excellent way for you to help a student really immerse themselves in general practice. The experience helps them to achieve their learning needs and gain an understanding of a practice population and community.

It is also an excellent opportunity for students to benefit from your positive role modelling.

What the placement involves

The Community Elective is flexible to the needs of both the GP surgery and the students, and can be tailored to suit both by agreement. It does not have to be aligned to the programme.

The student will attend the practice for three full days of each week. The two remaining days are assigned to medical education/research and personal study.

At the end of the placement, the student will produce a reflective piece for their Personal and Professional Development portfolio, which will be reviewed by their Academic Advisor.

To maximise their experiential learning, students will need designated clinical time to see cases that you are managing, with an opportunity for discussion and debrief after each patient is seen. This would be for a minimum of three patients per session to enhance the opportunity for debrief.

We would also advise time with other members of the practice team and wider primary care teams, at the discretion of the GP supervisor.

It would be helpful if students had opportunities to sit in practice-related / Multi-disciplinary team meetings. This should inform the reflective piece needed for assessment of the placement.

You will also sign an assessment form as a record of attendance and performance.
