Annette, a stroke survivor, has written a poem to convey what it’s like to experience dysarthria.<\/p>\n

Let’s Sing and Dance Until We Drop (or Dancing with Dysarthria)<\/h2>\n

Come on, let\u2019s put some music on<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s sing and dance until we drop,<\/p>\n

Up as loud as it will go \u2013 I like this one a lot.<\/p>\n

And when they shout out… \u201cTurn it down!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll pretend we haven\u2019t heard.<\/p>\n

What do you mean? \u2013 \u2018sing louder\u2019<\/p>\n

I\u2019m singing as loud as I can.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What do you mean? – \u2018those aren\u2019t the words\u2019<\/p>\n

The right words are in my head.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What do you mean I don\u2019t sound right?<\/p>\n

Inside I\u2019m singing with all my might.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mouth and feet just refuse to do<\/p>\n

The things that I am telling them to.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Believe me, dearest, I\u2019ve not changed<\/p>\n

Inside I sing and dance the same,<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just my body that gets it wrong<\/p>\n

As if singing wrong words to a favourite song.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Inside I\u2019m still that same old me<\/p>\n

Tho\u2019 my body may act absurd<\/p>\n

As if someone has shouted,\u00a0 \u201cTurn it down!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

– It pretends it hasn\u2019t heard.<\/p>\n
