Workplace Contact Patterns in England during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Analysis of the Virus Watch prospective cohort study

by | Apr 22, 2022 | Journal papers, Theme 3: Sector-specific studies | 0 comments

This paper, published in the The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, and produced by researchers as part of Theme 3 of the PROTECT study, uses data from electronic contact diaries submitted by participants in the Virus Watch project between November 2020 and November 2021 to investigate how workplace attendance and contact with other workers varied between occupations during this period.

The research found the highest probability of ‘intense space sharing’ with others among healthcare and education workers. Among all occupational groups, levels of workspace sharing and close contact have increased in later stages of the pandemic compared to earlier stages, presenting an ongoing challenge in terms of controlling transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
