This paper, published in BMJ Open and produced by researchers funded under Theme 2 of the PROTECT<\/a><\/span> study, details the evidence and analysis that was used to support the development of the COVID-19 virus transmission visualisation<\/a><\/span> simultaneously published in the British Medical Journal.<\/p>\n

Based on evidence and input from 27 international experts, the paper found the airborne transmission route to be the most significant in most situations, while face coverings, especially when worn by an infected person as a form of source control, were deemed to be the most important control measure. However, all routes \u2013 including via surfaces and person-to-person \u2013 were considered to play a part in transmission, and simple measures such as physical distancing, hand washing, and respiratory hygiene were found to make a useful contribution to controlling the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n
