DiCED has\u00a0<\/span>now finished\u00a0<\/span>collecting pre- and post-election data about the 2020 US presidential campaign.\u00a0 We will be using this data to investigate the extent to which\u00a0<\/span>data-driven campaigning matters<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>the extent to which it influences turnout, vote choice and\/or attitudes to the democratic system.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Together with\u00a0<\/span>social media election advertising research company \u2018Who Targets Me\u2019 (WTM) we\u00a0<\/span>recruit<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0and invite<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0a panel of participants to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>download an app to measure their exposure to political advertising on Facebook prior to the election. We ask<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0them to complete a pre- and post-election survey measuring demographic, political and psychological\u00a0<\/span>characteristics,<\/span>\u00a0and geographic location.\u00a0<\/span>Th<\/span>e results of this survey have provided us with a baseline of the respondents\u2019 understanding of politics and their views on the candidates and issues in the election,\u00a0<\/span>which will help us build a more nuanced picture of who is being targeted, why and with what effect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Simultaneously, t<\/span>ogether with<\/span>\u00a0the research company<\/span>\u00a0YouGov,\u00a0<\/span>we have created\u00a0<\/span>what we refer to as the\u00a0<\/span>SoMA<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Social Media Analysis)\u00a0<\/span>panel<\/span>. The\u00a0<\/span>SoMA<\/span>\u00a0panel includes\u00a0<\/span>up to 1,000 participants drawn from a nationally representative sample of up to 5,000 participants.\u00a0<\/span>Th<\/span>is panel consists of those participants who\u00a0<\/span>have agreed to share their social media accounts (Twitter and\/or Facebook)<\/span>, as well as up to 500 participants from YouGov\u2019s Pulse panel<\/span>. Y<\/span>ouGov Pulse is a website monitoring tool that tracks all websites visited\u00a0<\/span>by these participants, who have agreed to share their browsing history.\u00a0<\/span>We also distributed a pre- and post-election survey to the\u00a0<\/span>SoMA<\/span>\u00a0panel participants to measure key demographic and political characteristics.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We will be using the social media accounts\u00a0<\/span>shared with us to observe the social media feeds of these participants, to measure their exposure to data-driven campaigning prior to election day. We will be linking this data with their responses to the pre- and post-election surveys to\u00a0<\/span>perform a causal analysis of the effects of data-driven campaigning, and particularly its influence on voter behaviour.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
