Meet Tim – our award-winning BSc Accounting alumnus

Hi! I’m Tim Mickleburgh. I’m a First Class BSc Accounting alumnus of the University of Manchester Class of 2023 and PQ Magazine’s reigning Accountancy Graduate of the Year.

My three years at the University of Manchester were a life changing experience. I loved every second of my time at university and found myself falling in love with academia, growing in confidence, and making the most of the opportunities that university had to offer. I dream of becoming a university lecturer in accounting and finance after I’ve advanced my studies and gained some professional experience.

Following my graduation, I was one of three students around the country to be shortlisted for PQ Magazine’s Accountancy Graduate of the Year award. I was lost for words when I heard my name get announced as the winner at the awards ceremony. Graham Hambly, Editor of PQ Magazine, said, “Our judges loved Tim’s motivation and the simple fact that he loves learning too. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day he’s back on the shortlist for Lecturer of the Year”.

Jennifer Rose, Senior Lecturer at Alliance Manchester Business School, said, “Tim is an awesome example of the difference university can make. He made the most of every opportunity which came along and the way he developed as an undergraduate was remarkable. He was transformed from a shy teenager to a highly competent professional upon graduation and continues to inspire accounting undergraduates enabling them to also flourish.”

Reimala Sivalingam, Senior Lecturer at Alliance Manchester Business School said, “Tim has supported many students by sharing his knowledge and experience to help them succeed academically and boost their career prospects. His enthusiasm as an undergraduate of the University of Manchester and continued support as an alumnus has truly made a difference in enhancing other students’ lives at university and beyond.”

Since graduating from the University of Manchester, I’ve been working in the accounting and finance profession while studying for the CIMA qualification to become a qualified accountant. My BSc Accounting studies exempt me from CIMA’s Certificate and Operational level exams. I am currently part qualified with the CIMA Adv Dip MA designation having passed the Management level exams all first time in 2024. I’ve only got the Strategic level exams left to pass until I become a CIMA Chartered Global Management Accountant.

University can be a life changing experience for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and I’m proud to use my story to showcase that. I hope that my success inspires other students at the University of Manchester to work hard with their studies and make the most of the unique opportunities that come with being a student at such a prestigious university.
