I first learned about the Master’s in Accounting programme through the University of Manchester’s official website. I studied Accounting for my undergraduate degree and then worked as an auditor at Ernst & Young for three years. Therefore, I already had some knowledge of accounting and auditing before I applied. However, after working for a few years, I realised that I wanted to develop my knowledge further and understand the subject from a more international point of view. This encouraged me to return to university and study for a master\u2019s in accounting at Manchester.<\/p>\n

This was my first time studying abroad. Before I came to Manchester, I felt excited but also a little nervous. I was moving to a new country, adapting to a different way of learning, and living in an unfamiliar environment. One thing I wish I had known before starting the course is that it is quite academic. Students need to spend a lot of time reading, understanding theories, and preparing for class discussions. Practical experience is not always included in the timetable, so it is important to look for industry placements by yourself. Even so, I chose to study abroad because I wanted to experience a different education system, meet people from around the world, and become more independent.<\/p>\n

One of my biggest academic gains this year has been developing a more systematic understanding of international accounting standards. My previous studies and work experience gave me a good foundation in accounting and auditing. Studying in the UK has helped me look at these familiar topics from a different perspective. In the future, I hope to work for an international company, so this knowledge is useful for my career plans. It has broadened my professional knowledge and will help me work under different rules and communicate more effectively with colleagues from different countries.<\/p>\n

The course is mainly academic, but it is not only about textbooks and numbers. Lecturers sometimes invite industry professionals to share their experience and show us how accounting is used in the workplace. One memorable session was given by a finance professional from Manchester Airport, who introduced the airport’s ESG plans. He explained how environmental, social, and governance factors can affect a company’s financial planning and business decisions. As the business environment changes, accountants also need to understand sustainability and corporate social responsibility.<\/p>\n

During the year, I also took part in a summer placement organised by the programme director. I joined a local charity as a finance volunteer. This was a valuable experience because I could use my existing financial skills in a new working and cultural environment. It also gave me practical work experience in the UK. Most of my previous experience was in a large professional services firm, so volunteering showed me a different side of finance. I learned that financial knowledge can help businesses improve efficiency, but it can also help charities achieve their social goals.<\/p>\n

If you are thinking about applying for this programme, I would suggest deciding what you want to gain from the year before you begin. The course can give you a strong foundation in international accounting and research. However, if you also want practical experience in the UK, you should start looking for placements, volunteering roles, and industry events early. Time management is also important because reading, assignments, and group work can take a lot of time and energy. Try not to focus only on exams and grades. Take opportunities outside the classroom and speak to people from different backgrounds. In my experience, these are often the parts of the year that help you grow the most.<\/p>\n
