As an international student looking for genuine learning, global exposure, inspired peers, and a fruitful overall experience abroad, I had high hopes from my Masters journey. I aimed to achieve multifaceted\u00a0growth both\u00a0personally and\u00a0professionally; and after completing\u00a0my\u00a0bachelor\u2019s\u00a0in economics, I wanted to expand my skillset in a way that had a real-world impact.\u00a0The MSc Finance program at AMBS stood out to me as it had a selective cohort, rigorous modules, stellar accreditations, and appealing employability outcomes.\u00a0As the cherry on top, I was also awarded the Global Futures Scholarship, which further solidified my choice to enrol.<\/p>\n

The course comprised both quantitatively stimulating modules like Time Series and Cross-Sectional Econometrics, Asset Pricing, and Financial Statement Analysis as well as analytically engaging ones such as Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate Finance. We had a diverse pool of optional electives to choose from, out of which I studied concepts like Portfolio Investment and Derivative Securities. The lectures were meticulously curated in a way that combined theoretical learning and an application based approach to major concepts crucial to the finance world. We also got hands-on experience in tools like Stata and MATLAB with the help of weekly workshops and tutorials.<\/p>\n

However, the most interesting part for me has been the Finance Zone in the Eddie Davies Library which gives you access to the Bloomberg terminal and plenty of other resources all in one place on campus. I have used tools like Compustat extensively for my dissertation, which looks at geopolitical risk and the marginal value of corporate cash. Running that kind of analysis on nearly 80,000 firm-year observations is only realistic because of the kind of data infrastructure we get along with the motivation and expertise to use it properly. That is mainly driven by the quality of the faculty which constantly keeps pace with how finance actually evolves and pushes you to truly think beyond the textbook. While I was working on my dissertation, the Trading Bootcamp with AmplifyMe became another highlight. It involved five days of live finance simulations, delivered by experts who brought a unique kind of learning to a lecture theatre. It made concepts like Asset Management and Hedge Fund\u00a0Trading\u00a0feel tangible rather than theoretical, and it also gave us an insight into what our potential career paths in finance could look like.<\/p>\n

The strength of this course lies as much in the cohort as in the curriculum. It attracts immensely motivated students from various educational backgrounds across the world, and interacting with them has been one of the most intellectually and culturally enriching experiences in my time here. It was through the group coursework that I realised the value of peers who will challenge you to push your limits. We built and tested a trading strategy using years of real market data, managed an active portfolio against a live benchmark and had to defend every investment decision we made, and valued financial instruments using several different approaches to understand where each one held up and where it did not. These projects truly gave us all a glimpse into the practical realm of the course, reflecting the standards expected in industry.<\/p>\n

In terms of career development, the course has given me both the technical fluency and the ability to substantiate my strengths in interviews. The CFA Institute Affiliate status and the course’s ESRC recognition are testament to how the curriculum is benchmarked against real industry and academic standards. Through the university’s Financial Times subscription, I’ve developed a habit of keeping up with industry trends and movements, and I love following the innovative startups disrupting the market. For me personally, this course has opened doors I didn\u2019t know existed before within the vast financial services industry. I finally feel confident in the choice of roles I want to pursue after this and where I stand in achieving them.<\/p>\n
