Guo Yu, a graduate of\u00a0MA Translation and Interpreting Studies<\/a>\u00a0shares with us some insights into her time at Manchester and how it has helped her career. Now working in Game Localisation Management, Guo deals with all localisation-related tasks for specific projects in a global game company, including: translation, coordination with language service vendors, Language Quality Assurance (LQA), and helping with game world design.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why did you originally choose to study your course at Manchester?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Famous<\/span>\u00a0scholars,\u00a0<\/span>high rankings of my major and\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0University,\u00a0<\/span>as well as a\u00a0<\/span>good combination of\u00a0<\/span>theory<\/span>-oriented and\u00a0<\/span>practice<\/span>-oriented\u00a0<\/span>course<\/span>\u00a0settings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Did you always know you wanted to do the career you\u2019re in? Did your course or time at the University help influence this?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Not exactly,\u00a0but\u00a0 I knew I’d choose my career\u00a0according to my\u00a0major.\u00a0The courses helped me develop my professional skills, and\u00a0the university\u00a0atmosphere\u00a0encouraged me to bravely explore\u00a0the\u00a0possibilities and what I\u2019m really interested in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How did your course set you up for your career path?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0theory-related courses\u00a0provided me with different views on translation, translation works and translation industry,\u00a0bringing me\u00a0advantages in\u00a0solving some problems at work.\u00a0The\u00a0practice-related\u00a0courses I chose, such as literature translation, international organisation translation and consecutive interpreting, were a good\u00a0foundation for me to be a\u00a0practitioner\u00a0in the localisation\u00a0industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What was the most surprising takeaway from your course that\u2019s helped you in later life?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Firstly, the professional skills that I mentioned above. Secondly,\u00a0assets\u00a0in terms of thinking, e.g.\u00a0how to analyse one question from\u00a0its nature, critical thinking,\u00a0and the ability to solve a problem step by step.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to a student looking to start your course and\/or join the University?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Try<\/span>\u00a0to find what you are interested in<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>then do everything with your passion. The days at Manchester will be an important support system for you to be better.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
