You\u2019re likely to feel bombarded with things to do during your first week as a fresher on campus, but one thing you shouldn\u2019t miss is the societies fair. Not only will you receive thousands of freebies, which, as a student, you can\u2019t complain, but you\u2019ll hear all about what our Student Union has to offer you. Societies are undoubtedly a great way to \u2018put yourself out there\u2019, common advice heard from most parents when starting university, and to meet like-minded individuals. There\u2019s something for everyone at Manchester, and if you can\u2019t find what you\u2019re looking for, then you can start your very own society with a friend!<\/p>\n

Of course there are your popular Sports societies ran by the Athletics Union, and your acting and dancing classes, but here\u2019s a list of 5 societies that Manchester offers that you might not have heard about before:<\/p>\n

A Capella and Beat Boxing Society \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n

For those of you who love to sing, maybe you\u2019d like to try out A Capella or beat boxing. It\u2019s an inclusive society welcoming singers of all abilities, so no need to worry if you\u2019re a new voice. You\u2019ll get to sing to your hearts content and perform live at the ICCA\u2019s. The social secretary of A Capella, Mia, commented \u2018joining acapella society has helped my confidence grow and lead me to meet some great people. Although parts were challenging, it was a great experience and really helped me settle into University life\u2019.<\/p>\n

Film Making and Film Society \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

Film making society provides you with the help and technical assistance to turn your ideas into reality. They hold weekly meet-ups to discuss ideas as well as practical workshops. If you prefer watching films, rather than making them, film society offers free weekly screenings in the Student Union, along with group cinema trips. All films are voted on by members and there is usually a relaxed discussion after showings.<\/p>\n

Pole and Burlesque Society \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pole and burlesque society have highly skilled teachers hosting a variety of classes. This society is an inclusive environment \u2018providing a space where members can improve their fitness, confidence, and relationship with their bodies\u2019. Pole society offers various classes to suit all abilities, as well as weekly social events. They also hold two annual showcases to display students’ talent whilst raising money to empower sex workers.<\/p>\n

Run Wild Society \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not keen on the thought of competitive team sport, but hate exercising alone? Run Wild society might be for you! The University of Manchester\u2019s very own running club, is up and running, excuse the pun, providing you with weekly jogging partners. They host free group runs suitable to different abilities, so if you fancy a speedy 5k one evening and a slow jog the next, just switch groups. The best part comes after all the running though, where everybody heads to the Union Bar to catch their breath and enjoy a pint. As a member of Run Wild society myself, I love being able to meet new people and run as a group rather than solo, especially as it starts to get darker in the winter months.<\/p>\n

Thrift Society \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the fashionistas out there, thrift society has got you covered. Running group thrift trips to charity shops and vintage sales in Manchester\u2019s Northern Quarter, you\u2019ll be sure to find a bargain. They also hold regular swap shops and up-cycling workshops so you can learn how to sustainably renew your wardrobe.<\/p>\n
