Hi! I’m Tim Mickleburgh. I’m a final year BSc Accounting student at the University of Manchester.

Growing up as a young carer and being the first person in my family to go to university, I doubted whether someone like me could succeed at university. I am really proud of how I have excelled on the BSc Accounting programme at the University of Manchester and it is a dream come true to be graduating with a First Class degree.

""

The three-year BSc Accounting programme has built up my knowledge of different areas of accounting. I was really proud when I was awarded the Professor Timothy O’Leary Prize for being the highest performing student in the Intermediate Management Accounting course during second year. I have really enjoyed the lectures and seminars and spent lots of time studying outside of the timetabled teaching with my course mates in the study spaces in Alliance Manchester Business School and the Main Library.

The BSc Accounting programme’s most prominent course is the 40 credit Corporate Financial Communication and Valuation course which is completed during final year and comprises three assignments, one of which was a 30 page report to determine the usefulness of the annual report of a FTSE 100 company, looking at the annual report’s structure, narrative and content about the company’s financial performance, business model and strategy and corporate social responsibility as well as the company’s choice of accounting policies. My university studies have exempt me from a number of ACA, CIMA and ACCA exams which will support me in becoming a Chartered Accountant beyond graduation.

""

I have really enjoyed being a Student Ambassador during my final year. I have written blogs to share my university experience with the next generation of students and answered their questions on Unibuddy web chat. I have also helped out at open days and taken new students on campus tours. I will treasure my purple Student Ambassador t-shirt forever!

""

My three years at the University of Manchester have been the best years of my life. My advice to other students would be to make the most of the opportunities that come with being a student at such a prestigious university. Make sure you engage with the teaching during lectures and seminars, study hard outside of the timetabled teaching and make use of office hours to seek guidance and feedback from your lecturers to help you improve your work. And remember to get involved in extracurricular activities, make lots of friends and take lots of photos!
