As a\u00a0Flying start business accounting student, the importance of societies\u00a0resonates strongly\u00a0for me.\u00a0\u00a0Whilst achieving this\u00a0programme\u00a0put me on an accelerated path,\u00a0being in a competitive society\u00a0means having to do more to stand out.\u00a0\u00a0Even within my exclusive course, I\u00a0wouldn’t\u00a0be extraordinary\u00a0in a program of\u00a050 students graduating\u00a0yearly\u00a0per\u00a0university\u00a0of\u00a0four,\u00a0for this program.\u00a0Hence, societies became a\u00a0prominent player to stand out.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Societies have been such a positive experience for me,\u00a0both\u00a0as a\u00a0consumer,\u00a0as well as on the board. During\u00a0my\u00a0first\u00a0year,\u00a0I\u00a0frequently\u00a0attended arts and craft societies to help me find pockets of peace amidst the stressful semesters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Throughout these events, re-opening myself to people was\u00a0eye-opening. Sometimes moving\u00a0away\u00a0to\u00a0university\u00a0can\u00a0help\u00a0you\u00a0realise\u00a0the world is\u00a0not\u00a0as small as the city you came from.\u00a0Branching out helps you realise how vast the world is\u00a0and just how friendly and open people really are. Sometimes, you make friends\u00a0at\u00a0these\u00a0events,\u00a0and other times you simply enjoy the\u00a0fleeting experience of\u00a0someone’s\u00a0essence for the\u00a0brief\u00a0encounter\u00a0that\u00a0it is.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coming\u00a0to a university as big as\u00a0Manchester\u00a0allows for there to be\u00a0greater\u00a0consumer choice. Hundreds of\u00a0students attend.\u00a0Each\u00a0bringing\u00a0their own creative touch to\u00a0social\u00a0life\u00a0outside of class. Societies vary from\u00a0niche\u00a0sports,\u00a0career\u00a0guidance,\u00a0K-pop\u00a0and international\u00a0dance, and art.\u00a0It\u00a0allows for a chance to invest in hobbies despite being studious and meeting like-minded people at such events.\u00a0It can be so easy to get lost in studying and not investing time into hobbies, but societies are a reminder that you can still invest in those hobbies and often a lot cheaper.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being in a finance heavy course, I am part of\u00a0the board of a\u00a0crafty society\u00a0(Get crafty for Charity).\u00a0Like night and day, I know.\u00a0When I first shot my shot, it was initially to\u00a0be unique.\u00a0Yet\u00a0it was one of the best learning curve experiences.\u00a0\u00a0Being part of a board is not just a badge you claim and wear.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a role with set duties.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Society bodies are student led with\u00a0presidents and treasurers and event managers (like me).\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a fascinating process to be a part of the body and to see the inner workings of the events.\u00a0Like small businesses with budgets and renting rooms for crafty events, it feels entrepreneurial.\u00a0It makes you realise sometimes that small business\u00a0start-ups\u00a0can be\u00a0simpler\u00a0than you think.\u00a0These roles make you casually implement business knowledge such as working out\u00a0profits and\u00a0total costs.\u00a0Contemplating quality or quantity? Promoting events\u00a0on\u00a0social media.\u00a0They are all business\u00a0experiences.\u00a0Accessible through university\u00a0societies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"There is so much beauty in the student-led aspect of societies. We get creative freedom. Such as being crafty also for a noble cause of charities. Being able to support those in need whilst also cultivating long lasting momentous occasions. We get to partner with other societies. We get to be more casual and meet each other halfway. If a fellow committee member were unavailable due to timetable clashes, others could meet them halfway\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Needless to say, I\u00a0would highly recommend joining societies.\u00a0Get a taste of which ones you may like through fresher’s fairs. Meet new people\u00a0and be different.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
