Sustainability: Curriculum content

Often the easiest place to start is thinking about content. Whether your unit/programme specifically addresses sustainability or not, there is likely some element of sustainability that could be incorporated.

  • Are there areas in your subject that relate to any of the UN SDGs? For example climate change, quality education, economic growth or gender equality?
  • If so do you highlight these to students? And are students encouraged to critically reflect on these?
  • Are there opportunities through your content (case studies, problem-based learning) to engage with the local, regional or global community?
  • Do your case studies allow your students to draw out and discuss broader issues e.g. equity and social justice?
  • Are your materials inclusive and representative of a diverse range of viewpoints, communities, authors etc?
  • Do any of your aims or learning outcomes make specific reference to environmental sustainability?
  • Can you integrate any environmental sustainability research in your department or the Faculty into your unit (via case studies, talks, guest lectures etc)?
