Our project<\/h1>\nContext of the study: Mental Health Act Assessments<\/h2>\n
A Mental Health Act (MHA) Assessment is an <\/span>assessment to decide whether someone should be compulsorily detained in hospital under the <\/span><\/b>MHA 1983<\/span><\/b><\/a> if they are unwilling to be <\/span>admitted <\/span>on a voluntary basis<\/span> and are a danger to themselves or others. <\/span>Detention<\/span> is <\/span>usually for <\/span>their protection, assessment, treatment and care<\/span><\/a>. <\/span> This <\/span>assessment process i<\/span>s commonly called \u2018sectioning\u2019 after the sections of the Mental Health Act 1983. <\/span> In some cases, an assessment results in a <\/span>community treatment order<\/span><\/a>, rather than in hospital.<\/span> <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n The people carrying out the assessment will consider other community-based options that might help, such as support and treatment in the home. The assessors will try to consider all the options.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n MHA Assessments are usually carried out by:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Creating the best communication possible is a priority during MHA Assessments. There is a legal requirement to ensure a person\u2019s language needs are fully met if they do not use spoken English.
