Pint of Science (pintofscience.co.uk) is a yearly, worldwide public engagement event in which researchers discuss the science that makes them tick over a drink in pubs across the country. This year Matt Hepworth spoke at the Old Abbey Taphouse in Manchester about the wonderful world of intestinal microbes. Matt discussed some of the exciting, emerging roles for these “good bacteria” with the audience including how your intestinal “microbiota” can determine whether you are fat or thin, effect your mood and prevent allergies. The audience also heard all about how “poo transplants” may help to treat diseases in future and learned about how research in the Hepworth lab is helping us to understand how the immune system acts to keep a healthy, peaceful relationship with our gut bacteria.
