Pregnancy and Immune Tolerance

Professor Mark Travis, Immune Tolerance Lead and various members of the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation met with the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre from St Mary’s Hospital on Monday 10th June at Chancellor’s Hotel Manchester to brainstorm how the Institute and Centre could work together.

The loss of immune tolerance and resulting inflammation underlies many pregnancy and fertility associated complications – the brainstorming session identified areas of clinical unmet need where the Becker Institute could contribute to increased understanding of the underlying inflammatory causes.

The day kicked off with overviews on the MFRC from Dr Ed Johnstone and on the Becker Institute from Professor Mark Travis. This was followed by a series of short talks, alternating between researchers from the two groups. A short coffee break and some discussions over the lunch break identified some key areas for collaboration and even the basic outlines of a few projects. This will hopefully lead to some collaborative grants in the future!
