\/][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243; specialty_columns=&#8221;2&#8243;][et_pb_row_inner admin_label=&#8221;Row&#8221;][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; saved_specialty_column_type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1>Skin immunology case study<\/h1>\n<p class=\"subHeading\">On the surface: understanding the interactions between skin cells and the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>We are investigating how the immune system interacts with skin cells to maintain tissue homeostasis, induce immune responses or cause skin disease.<\/p>\n<p>This is a collaborative effort between the investigators at The University of Manchester and the clinical academics at Salford Royal Foundation NHS Trust.<\/p>\n<p>In more detail we are focusing on understanding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the contribution of immune granular cells (for example mast cells) to skin physiology and acute and chronic inflammation;<\/li>\n<li>the inflammatory signalling pathways, including Langerhans\u2019 cells, cytokines and microbiome that drive psoriasis;<\/li>\n<li>the contribution of innate immune cells to skin carcinogenesis;<\/li>\n<li>the role of immune cells in hair growth and hair disease;<\/li>\n<li>the interaction between UV, microbiome and skin;<\/li>\n<li>the inflammatory and immunomodulatory pathways underlying the photodermatoses;<\/li>\n<li>the alteration and contribution of innate and adaptive immune cells to the course of skin ageing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our research is primarily in vivo but makes use of human primary immune cells, skin organ cultures, skin biopsies and pre- and post-treatment clinical samples.
