Wired Magazine<\/a> recently interviewed Dr Elizabeth Mann<\/a> and Dr Laurence Pearmain<\/a> about their paper published in the European Respiratory Journal<\/a> on Long Covid and the link between abnormal immune cells known as monocytes and lung injury – resulting in\u00a0long-lasting and frustrating symptoms like breathlessness.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When the team looked at blood samples from patients who had recovered from\u00a0Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) or flu, they didn\u2019t find the increased CXCR6 on monocytes that was characteristic of long Covid patients. Mann thinks that this demonstrates how monocytes in long Covid become abnormal during the acute infection and don\u2019t recover, meaning that they persist in being drawn into the lungs and cause inflammation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This could be what leads to something like breathlessness longer term. \u201cYou need monocyte migration to go and clear the infection,\u201d Mann says. \u201cOnce you\u2019ve recovered, you\u2019d hope that it goes back to normal\u2014but it doesn\u2019t, it seems to just stay dysregulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
