Study title: Communication Strategies for People with Hearing Loss

Our study is investigating the use of different communication strategies – tips or tricks that might help people to hear better – in different listening situations.

About the study

People with hearing loss may report difficulties hearing in a range of different listening situations. Either with or without hearing aids, there may be situations where they struggle to hear more than others. The first phase of our study collected evidence of communication strategies – things that people with hearing loss do in different situations to hear better, – and the next phase of the study will look at how this information could best be delivered to people with hearing loss to help with hearing in different situations.

Take part in the study

If you meet the criteria outlined below, you may be eligible to take part.
You must:

  • be over 60 years old;
  • read, write, and speak English;
  • struggle to hear conversations in some situations;
  • be able to attend two sessions at the University of Manchester;
  • not use a cochlear implant (an implanted electronic hearing aid)

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be invited to attend two in-person sessions at the University of Manchester to discuss your experiences of listening difficulties, and to answer a series of questionnaires. You may learn new strategies to help with your hearing, and you will be able to share your experience of listening difficulties to help others. You will be reimbursed for your time.

Download the participant information sheet (PIS) for more detailed information about the study and what taking part would mean for you. It is important that you read this document in full before making a decision about whether or not to participate.
