What are Mitigating Circumstances?<\/strong><\/h5>\nGrounds of mitigation are unforeseeable<\/strong> or unpreventable<\/strong> circumstances that could have or did have a significant adverse effect on the academic performance of a student. Possible mitigating circumstances include:<\/p>\n\n- Significant illness or injury<\/li>\n
- The death or critical\/significant illness of a close family member\/dependant<\/li>\n
- Significant family crises or a major financial problem leading to acute stress<\/li>\n
- Absence for public service (e.g. jury service)<\/li>\n
- Some IT issues such as a network or hardware fault at the point of submission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Circumstances that will not be normally regarded as grounds for mitigation include:<\/p>\n
\n- Holiday, moving house and events that were planned or could reasonably have been expected<\/li>\n
- Assessments that are scheduled close together<\/li>\n
- Misreading the timetable or misunderstanding the requirements of the assignment<\/li>\n
- Inadequate planning and time management<\/li>\n
- Failure, loss or theft of a computer that prevents submission of work on time; students should back their work up regularly<\/li>\n
- Consequences of paid employment<\/li>\n
- Exam stress or panic attacks not diagnosed as illness or supported by medical evidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- If you are requesting a deadline extension for an assignment, please consider how much extra time you think you will need to complete it. Shorter extensions are often more likely to be approved.
