The numbers are also transcribed below the image along with the number of deaths by suicide in Jersey.\" width=\"703\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.manchester.ac.uk\/ncish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/01\/image009.png 703w, https:\/\/sites.manchester.ac.uk\/ncish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/01\/image009-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.manchester.ac.uk\/ncish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/01\/image009-150x76.png 150w, https:\/\/sites.manchester.ac.uk\/ncish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/01\/image009-250x127.png 250w, https:\/\/sites.manchester.ac.uk\/ncish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/01\/image009-350x178.png 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text: Number of suicides stats&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>There were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2,424 suicide deaths in Northern Ireland, 735 (30%) were by patients;<\/li>\n<li>4,008 suicide deaths in Wales, 916 (23%) were by patients;<\/li>\n<li>8,343 suicide deaths in Scotland, 2,510 (30%) were by patients;<\/li>\n<li>55,705 suicide deaths in England, 14,464 (26%) were by patients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, there were 110 suicide deaths in Jersey; 45 (41%) were by patients.<\/p>\n<p>In England and Wales there were higher rates of suicide deaths in 2017 and 2018 following the lowering of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/articles\/changeinthestandardofproofusedbycoronersandtheimpactonsuicidedeathregistrationsdatainenglandandwales\/2020-12-08\">standard of proof<\/a> used by coroners introduced in 2018, and then a plateau. However, figures in 2022 are expected to rise once late inquests are added.<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland there were higher rates from 2018 compared to those in 2014-2017. Northern Ireland rates were lower from 2015 which reflect a change in how some deaths are classified (see details of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nisra.gov.uk\/system\/files\/statistics\/Suicide_Review_Report.pdf\">review of suicide statistics in Northern Ireland<\/a> (PDF &#8211; NISRA)).
