\/][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text: Overview&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"overview\">Overview<\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 30%;float: right;margin: 0 0 10px 10px;border: 3px solid #00007e;padding: 15px;background-color: #c4cff4\">\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.65em;color: #00007e;text-align: center\"><strong>1,697<\/strong> deaths per year<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>26%<\/strong> of all suicide deaths<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There were 18,670 patients who died by suicide (i.e. people in contact with mental health services within 12 months of suicide) in the UK and Jersey in 2012-2022. This represents 26% of all suicide deaths, an average of 1,697 deaths per year (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.manchester.ac.uk\/ncish\/reports\/annual-report-2025\/suicide-in-the-general-population\/#map\">map showing suicide in the general and patient population for figures by country<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There was an increase in the number of patient suicides occurring from 2018 in line with the change in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/articles\/changeinthestandardofproofusedbycoronersandtheimpactonsuicidedeathregistrationsdatainenglandandwales\/2020-12-08\">standard of proof (Office for National Statistics)<\/a> for suicide that began in 2018. We did not see an increase during COVID-19 years and are currently estimating lower figures in 2020-2022. The number of suicides in England increased in 2018 and has been stable since, though this may yet increase in 2021-2022 following further inquests.
