About NWSTC and NWSTC Manchester
NWSTC
The North West Surgical Trials Centre (NWSTC) is one of nine Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Surgical Trials Centres that have been established since 2013.
NWSTC is embedded in the Liverpool Clinical Trials Centre and is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool and The University of Manchester.
The collaborative is funded by the Sir John Fisher Foundation and the Masonic Charitable Foundation.
Aims
- Develop and deliver world-class surgical trials (including translational research) that will improve outcomes for surgical patients.
- Develop and provide training for new surgical chief investigators.
- Provide research training through short courses, workshops and sandpit days.
- Develop an extensive network of academic and NHS surgeons in the north-west across all surgical specialities.
- Support and mentor the surgical trainee collaboratives, including the North West Research Collaborative, North West Breast Research Collaborative, and Liverpool Trainee Research Collaborative.
NWSTC Manchester
The NWSTC Manchester branch is based at The University of Manchester and led by Professor Cliona Kirwan. We have great links to neighbouring universities and organisations, including one of the UK’s major research and teaching Trusts (MFT).
We also benefit from the Manchester Clinical Research Facility (CRF), which is the largest and most comprehensive NIHR CRF in the UK.
Manchester boasts a diverse population and, above all, is an excellent place to deliver first-rate surgical research.
Aims
- Raise the profile and achievements of north-west surgeons.
- Develop a directory of research active surgeons to facilitate research.
- Create a portfolio of research activity occurring in Greater Manchester and the wider north-west.
- List surgeons who offer postgraduate clinical training opportunities.
