Funded UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the 18-month project brings together 14 academics from across The University of Manchester, 11 industrial partners and 1 local authority partner to tackle the challenge of plastic waste.<\/h3>\n

As a society, our daily personal and professional routines now rely on plastics in their many shapes and forms. However, our reliance on plastics comes at a cost, as the environmental impact of these materials is substantial, and growing.<\/p>\n

The amount of plastic waste generated annually in the UK is estimated to be nearly 5 million tonnes, and rising (WRAP<\/a> [opens in PDF]). There are complex social, political, economic, engineering, material questions that remain unanswered in dealing with this plastics challenge.<\/p>\n

This project was formed to synthesise and innovate interdisciplinary insights to deal with the plastics challenge in multiple forms across our everyday lives in homes, businesses, and in the city of Manchester.<\/p>\n
