Last week we attended the University of Manchester and the Manchester Student Union Volunteers of the Year Awards 2019. An award ceremony to celebrate all the wonderful work our staff, students and alumni do in the community.\u00a0. We were delighted so many of the winners were from SALC!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Isla Atay<\/strong> – BA (Hons) Music Student –\u00a0 1st Place winner of the Volunteer Award 2019 for her work in the Christmas Choir.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0“I am so grateful and humbled by this award, it was so unexpected! Thank you to Leonard Cheshire and Amy Bradley especially for making this project possible.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

India Burgess<\/strong> – BA (Hons) History Student – Student group of the year for her part in the team ‘Once a Month’ who provide free sanitary product to ladies who need them.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>“It feels like a great achievement to win the highly commended student of the year award, and first place for the student group of the year award (with Once a Month – a project I founded with my peer Gabriella Hartfield), as it’s really important to be reminded that the work you’re doing is helping, is appreciated, and to encourage more people to get involved with voluntary projects!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Grace Collier – <\/strong>BA (Hons) Politics and Modern History – 3rd\u00a0Place winner of the Volunteer Award 2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Isabella Rooke-Ley<\/strong> – MA (Gender, Sexually and Culture)\u00a0 – part of Manchester Sexpression. Event Manager for sex week, educate students about sex, relationships, the female body. Also visiting secondary schools around the Greater Manchester area and teaching them about sex education, which she does a part of a team through the year. Organising different events for sex week (11 Feb- 17th Feb) which is an annual event too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Congratulations to all winners and nominees the work you do the community really does make a difference and we are extremely proud of you!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nominations for the 2020 awards will open in January 2020!<\/p>\n

Volunteering is defined as\u00a0Any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims primarily to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than close relatives.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by senior staff, community partners, nominees and their family and friends.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Awards were given in four categories:<\/p>\n
