For University of Manchester students, there is no single correct path after graduation, and there are many options depending on personal goals, circumstances and interests.

Jump into a graduate job

Some graduates may choose to move straight into work through graduate jobs or graduate schemes, which often provide structured training and career development. However, it is also worth considering opportunities with smaller companies, charities, start-ups and local organisations, as these can offer valuable experience too. Degrees help develop transferable skills such as communication, research, organisation, teamwork and problem-solving, which are useful in many sectors.

See: Preparing for the workplace (The University of Manchester) and Manchester Graduate Talent (The University of Manchester) for current vacancies.

Try things out with internships or short-term work

For those who are unsure about committing to one career path, internships, placements, temporary roles, freelance work or fixed-term contracts can be a useful way to explore different industries, build confidence and strengthen a CV. Staying in Manchester or the wider North West may also be a practical option, especially for students who have built connections in the area.

See: Upskilling as a graduate (The University of Manchester)

Stay in study mode

Further study is another route, including master’s degrees, research degrees, teacher training, conversion courses or professional qualifications. Before applying, graduates should think carefully about whether the course supports their career goals, builds useful skills and is financially realistic.

Start something of your own

Graduation can also be a good time to explore entrepreneurship, whether through a business idea, creative project, freelance work or side hustle. Starting small, testing ideas and using university enterprise support can help turn plans into something more concrete.

See: https://www.entrepreneurship.manchester.ac.uk/.

Volunteer and give something back

Some graduates may decide to take a break, travel, work part-time, volunteer, save money or recover after final year. Taking time out can be valuable if it is given some structure, such as setting weekly goals, updating a CV or attending careers events.

Volunteering can also help graduates gain experience, meet people, build confidence and support causes they care about. It is especially useful for careers in charities, education, healthcare, sustainability, policy and community work.

Graduates may also consider opportunities beyond the UK, such as working abroad, studying overseas or returning to their home country. International students should check visa guidance early and seek official advice.

See: Volunteer | Alumni | The University of Manchester

Do not forget careers support still exists

Importantly, University of Manchester careers support continues after graduation, usually for up to two years. Graduates can access help with CVs, applications, interviews, careers guidance, events and opportunities through the Careers Service. Careers support is there for the “I have no idea what I’m doing” stage as much as the “I’ve got an interview next week” stage.

Overall, life after graduation can feel exciting and uncertain, but every route is valid. The best approach is to take one practical step at a time, use available support and remember that the first step after university does not have to be permanent.

Have a look at the Careers Service drop-ins for graduates over July:

https://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/graduates/

Your post-graduation starter checklist

Update your CV and LinkedIn profile while your degree projects and achievements are still fresh in your mind.

Pick three sectors, roles or courses you want to explore first.

Sign up to the Careers Service and look for opportunities, events and appointments.

Speak to someone who is already doing something you are curious about.

Set small weekly goals so the job or course search feels less overwhelming.

Check visa, funding or professional requirements early if they apply to you.

Remind yourself that your first step after graduation does not have to be your forever step.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav _builder_version=”3.0.106″
