Consultation with Deaf People with Dementia in Northern Ireland<\/h1>\n

This project was developed in a partnership between The University of Manchester, British Deaf Association Northern Ireland and Alzheimer\u2019s Society Northern Ireland, and it was funded by the Research and Innovation Fund in Alzheimer\u2019s Society.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this consultation was to ask Deaf people\u2019s experiences of support in Northern Ireland as well as asking professionals about their own experiences of supporting Deaf carers in the Deaf community. The consultation contributed towards a report that was submitted to Alzheimer\u2019s Society as evidence of challenges of support for the Deaf community.<\/p>\n

Contributions<\/h3>\n

As a result, this report influenced a pilot support service that was carried out by a Deaf advocate based in British Deaf Association Northern Ireland who met with Deaf people and their families with dementia.<\/p>\n

This pilot provided direct one to one support in BSL\/ISL supporting families to navigate support systems after diagnosis. The pilot is now complete and now further funding needs to be identified to provide further support for Deaf people with dementia and their families in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
