Enhancing resilience among deaf youth in South Africa<\/h1>\n

A research project by the\u00a0University of the Witwatersrand<\/a>\u00a0(South Africa) and the\u00a0University of Manchester<\/a>\u00a0(UK) using community based film methods to explore issues of vulnerability and resilience that deaf youth face in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Deaf children and youth face discrimination and exclusion from society. They are not given adequate opportunities for acquiring language, building meaningful relationships, receiving specialised healthcare and receiving equal education. All this vastly decreases their life-chances and infringes their human rights. A multi-disciplinary international collaboration, supported by the UK\u2019s\u00a0Arts and Humanities Research Council<\/a>, the\u00a0Medical Research Council<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Global Challenges Research Fund<\/a>, brings visual anthropology, social research and deaf studies together to enlighten and positively shift social attitudes towards deaf children and youth.<\/p>\n
