The funding received was to organise a class visit to the Whitworth gallery on Oxford\u00a0Road for a third-year undergraduate course on \u2018Art and\u00a0 Society\u2019. The rationale for\u00a0seeking support came from student feedback in previous years, which indicated that\u00a0some students were at a\u00a0 disadvantage because they had limited prior experience of the\u00a0art world, including galleries. In most cases this reflected the class background of the\u00a0affected individuals, with middle class families being more likely to take their children to\u00a0art exhibitions.<\/p>\n
A post-graduate student helped to organise the visit, liaising with the gallery and\u00a0arranging for one of the curators to meet with us in one of\u00a0 their teaching spaces. The\u00a0researcher surveyed the students before and after the visit to try and get a measure of\u00a0its effectiveness. The\u00a0 results strongly supported our feeling that the intervention had\u00a0been successful.<\/p>\n
There was unanimity in the surveys that the gallery visit had enhanced learning by\u00a0helping students to get a clearer sense of what the \u2018art\u00a0 world\u2019 is made of. Nearly all\u00a0student feedback on the course (that is, not the surveys specific to the visit) identified\u00a0the trip as one of its best\u00a0 features. Moreover, all the students said that the visit had\u00a0helped them to understand equality and diversity issues as they affected the art\u00a0 world.\u00a0This was largely to do with the artworks on exhibition at the time, and the talk from the\u00a0gallery curator, who emphasised that he saw\u00a0 his mission as creating socially inclusive\u00a0experiences.<\/p>\n
All those who said they had reservations about studying a course with \u2018art\u2019 in the title\u00a0commented favourably on the visit in the survey.\u00a0 Moreover, those with stronger\u00a0reservations expressed particularly positive views, emphasising that for them the visit\u00a0provided \u2018context on\u00a0 where art is placed in society\u2019. This group included two students\u00a0who self-identified as working class and two of those (3) who \u2018preferred not\u00a0 to say\u2019.<\/p>\n
Overall, the gallery visit achieved its objectives in terms of supporting and enhancing\u00a0the participation of students from non-middle-class backgrounds. It also seems that all\u00a0the students found it was an opportunity to develop their thoughts about equality and\u00a0inclusion through experiential learning.<\/p>\n
