The mission of the Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme is to continue to provide public confidence in nuclear energy by developing advanced recycle processes that operate safely, securely, sustainably and transparently.
The UK Government, through the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has implemented a five year integrated nuclear innovation programme that includes research and development on nuclear fuel recycle and waste management.
This programme’s goal is that by the early-mid 2020s radical improvements in economics, proliferation resistance, waste generation and environmental impacts of spent fuel recycling, compared to current recycle and waste management strategies, will have been demonstrated.
The initial phase of this integrated R&D programme is focused on advanced aqueous recycling of light water reactor (LWR) fuels.
Consortium partners
The consortium is led by National Nuclear Laboratory with academic partners from the University of Leeds, Lancaster University and The University of Manchester.
