Themed Case Discussion Facilitator

Themed Case Discussion (TCD) sessions are delivered in small groups of four to ten students. They are facilitated by the same GP during the Year 4 GP block.

The teaching sessions are based on the flipped classroom theory, where students complete online learning earlier in the week so they can apply this learning to a higher degree in structured teaching.

Tutors teach in various locations in the north-west, north Wales and the Isle of Man.

What the TCDs involve

General practice is at the core of teaching. The sessions are based on learning through authentic GP cases and build on the student’s online learning.

There are interactive tasks, such as role play and prescribing, and also protected time for clinical supervision.

Key areas that are covered include ethics and law, prescribing, clinical reasoning, behaviour change, patient safety and communication skills.

Dates for 2023-24

There are eight GP blocks to teach per year, between September and June. Each GP block lasts four weeks and tutors will teach for four hours on a Friday morning.
