Why get involved?

From developing your skills as an educator to inspiring future doctors to go into general practice, there are many reasons to get involved with teaching medical students from Manchester at your practice.

You will benefit from:

  • CPD-approved training that is recognised by the GMC;
  • support from a named lecturer at the University;
  • a variety of placements and teaching opportunities;
  • educational resources to help you with your teaching;
  • support for working towards further teaching qualifications, if you wish.

Benefits for other staff

It is not just GP tutors who will benefit from hosting students at their practice.

While a GP should always be the lead tutor when taking on students for placements at your practice, we recommend that you involve your colleagues in teaching.

These can include GP partners, salaried GPs, GPSTs, FY2s, advanced nurse practitioners, practice nurses, HCAs and practice managers, who will benefit from the varied and stimulating nature of training our students.

This will also help students to have a more fulfilling experience by coming into contact with a wide range of team members.

“Designing these experiences has been good practice for us and we have had very positive feedback from the three students, particularly their exposure to practice nurses, practice pharmacists and the admin team, and how they coordinate care and workflow to appropriate clinicians.”

Financial payments

You will receive financial payments in exchange for hosting our students at your practice. The size of these payments depends on the type of students you choose to train, and how long you train them for.

  • One Year 4 student for four weeks (16 days): equivalent to a locum for nine sessions.
  • One Year 5 student for two blocks (32 days): equivalent to locum cover for 18 sessions.
  • One Year 3 student for their SSCP (four weeks/20 days): equivalent to a full-time salaried GP for one week, or an ANP for two weeks.
  • Four ECE students in two pairs (one day): equivalent to a locum for one session.
  • One APEP or QE PEP student: equivalent to easing your way to revalidation.

More information on specific types of teaching and payments can be found in the Placements and teaching opportunities section.
