Reflections on the ESLTIS 2024 Conference: A Journey in Educational Innovation

I am excited to share my experience of participation in the “Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship” (ESLTIS 2024) conference this year, 2024. The theme of the conference, “What Comes Next for Teaching Practice?” resonated with my passion for exploring innovative pedagogical strategies and staying at the forefront of educational advancements. This event was a valuable opportunity to gain fresh perspectives and techniques to enhance my teaching practice.

From the moment I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant atmosphere and the diversity of presentations.

From the moment I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant atmosphere and the diversity of presentations. Educators from various communities showcased their work, sharing insights that were both enlightening and practical.

One standout moment for me was witnessing innovative presentation styles, such as the use of animation and creative text strategies to engage audiences effectively (See pic 1). This experience gave me a new direction on how I can present information to my students, making learning more dynamic and relatable.

The conference also provided a rich environment for discussing the challenges and opportunities in higher education today. Key topics included enrolment trends; particularly how fixed home student fees, which do not adjust for inflation, are influencing the recruitment of international students in England and Wales.

This situation contrasts with Scotland, where there are still fixed numbers for home undergraduate students. This disparity creates unique challenges and opportunities for universities when it comes to attracting and enrolling international students. Other topics included the shift towards online learning and how generative AI can be integrated into classrooms.

The emphasis on student well-being and digital literacy provided me with valuable tools for enhancing student engagement. I was particularly intrigued by discussions surrounding the use of AI in teaching—how it could transform my approaches and how I can support my students’ learning journeys in an increasingly digital world.

Interestingly, the classrooms at the conference were uniquely designed, featuring wooden framed surrounding the screens.

An unexpected highlight of my conference experience was indulging in traditional Scottish cuisine. I had the chance to try vegetarian haggis and Scottish buns with jam. These culinary delights were a treat, as they are dishes I had previously only read about. Experiencing the local culture through food was a wonderful way to bond with fellow attendees and add a personal touch to my time there.

One of my most cherished moments came during the gala dinner on the last night of the conference. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, and the sense of community was palpable. We were invited to participate in traditional Scottish dances, where we learned steps and danced together. It was a delightful and joyous experience that emphasised the importance of togetherness in educational settings—not just for learning but for creating a memorable experience that nurtures connections and camaraderie among educators.

Reflecting on my professional journey, I found the discussions surrounding the development of educational careers particularly relevant. The evolution of roles and career ladders for educators has come a long way; recognising the importance of mentorship and networking stood out to me. The conversations affirmed the value of creating a supportive environment where educators can share best practices and foster growth in one another.

The beautiful setting of the university next to the sea and the nearby museum served as a calming backdrop that enhanced the overall experience.

As I returned to the University of Manchester, I felt invigorated by my experiences at ESLTIS 2024. The insights gained from my time at the conference will undoubtedly influence my teaching practices. I plan to implement more innovative presentation techniques, experiment with digital tools like AI, and focus on enhancing student well-being in my classroom. My goal is to create a more inclusive and engaging learning environment for my students, ensuring that they feel supported and valued.

For those considering attending future conferences like ESLTIS, I highly encourage it. Not only is it an opportunity to learn from esteemed colleagues across different educational contexts, but it also provides a platform for networking and establishing connections that can lead to collaborative projects. I met a big group of colleagues from my own University of Manchester, and we spent time together and discussed things.

In conclusion, ESLTIS 2024 was an enriching experience that reinforced my commitment to continuous professional development. Attending such conferences can be especially beneficial for educators looking to enhance their teaching methodologies or those who wish to remain informed about the latest trends in education.
