Spotlights: examples from our pan-University Industry 4.0 network
Industry 4.0 does not only revolve around industrial digitalisation technologies, but is also driven by human-centric aspects and spans areas that are relevant to our health, economy and cities. Below are examples of research groups and colleagues around the University whose work illustrates the highly interdisciplinary nature of our Industry 4.0 capabilities.
Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS)
AMBS is home to world-leading research on innovation, people, management and organisations.
Spotlights: Prof Silvia Massini’s research interests include Global Sourcing of Innovation, and emerging technologies. Dr Richard Allmendinger researches the development and application of simulation, optimisation and analytics for manufacturing.
Department of Computer Science
The Department of Computer Science is home to the first stored program computer, the first floating point machine, the first transistor computer and the first computer to use virtual memory. Today, it is at the forefront of innovation in the University’s Industry 4.0 underpinning technologies.
Spotlight: Prof Angelo Congelosi is an expert in Machine Learning and Robotics.
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)
Ours is one of the largest electrical and electronic engineering departments in the UK, with expertise in autonomous systems, control systems, mechatronics and systems integration. Visit the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering website.
Spotlight: Dr Judith Apsley’s research spans several areas related to Industry 4.0, such as multi-drive systems for robotics and machine tools.
Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH)
With its strong links to leading healthcare institutions at the heart of Manchester’s devolved health system, and with the myriad of research activities in FBMH, The University is uniquely positioned to help optimise the delivery of healthcare at all scales in the system, from an individual health pathway up to the organisation of health economy. We are also tackling the challenge of healthcare’s slow adoption of digitisation tech.
Spotlight: Prof John Ainsworth’s interests include the learning health systems.
Manchester Urban Institute
The Manchester Urban Institute (MUI) aims to generate world-class research, achieve high levels of engagement and impact with non-academic stakeholders and train the next generation of urban activists, decision-makers and researchers. By bringing together work from across the arts and humanities, the social sciences, business and health we will create a better understanding of the global urban condition. The vision of the MUI is to realise more inclusive and just cities that are both environmentally and socially sustainable for the current and future generations through world-leading research, engagement/impact and training activities.
Spotlight: Prof James Evans researches and writes about how cities learn to become smarter and more sustainable.
