Understanding and supporting brain injury
Research in services can play a central role in raising awareness of the long-lasting impact of brain injury and in the development of new approaches to assessment, treatment and support.
At the MHSC Incubator webinar on 25th June, Dr Sara da Silva Ramos, from Brainkind, presented an overview of how research has informed improvement and development of services for people with acquired brain injury. Brainkind is the UK’s leading charity helping people to thrive after a brain injury, by providing innovative rehabilitation and ongoing support to ensure life after brain injury can be a life well lived.

Sara shared some examples of past studies demonstrating how the routine gathering of clinical outcome measures, and a culture fostering ‘service-led’ research has enabled Brainkind to demonstrate the positive and cost-effective impact of post-acute brain injury rehabilitation and to extend and apply this knowledge to other settings, such as criminal justice.
“Research is for everyone”.
Sara described how a Research Month initiative encouraged all colleagues to ‘be curious, ask questions and search for answers’, with the broader aim of demonstrating that we all have a ‘researcher’ within and that by adding a systematic approach to real world problems we can develop studies that can improve outcomes and inform the development of services.
