Here is a deliberately short list of pieces to read — and to view — to begin to get a grasp of what is meant by responsible research and innovation (RRI).
- [Primer] Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI): A Manchester perspective (2018), co-authored with Barbara Ribeiro, offers a concise (two-page) introduction. There multiple links to reference materials and sources for those who want to follow-up in depth.
- [Underlying concepts] Developing a framework for responsible innovation (2013) by Jack Stilgoe, Richard Owen and Phil Macnaghten is a key underpinning contribution. This is an essential read for understanding contemporary RRI rationales, frameworks, and approaches.
- [Video] In Responsible Research and Innovation, Claire Grierson, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol, presents her perspectives on RRI. Its a 10-minute view.
There is a burgeoning literature on RRI and a lot more that could (and should) be read. But a “deliberately short list” should be that. However, if you have worked your way through the three items above, then perhaps the next item to read is a critical take, Reflections on the practice of Responsible (Research and) Innovation in synthetic biology (2020) by Ken Taylor and Simon Woods.
