Staff development
We provide free PRiME (Professionals in Medical Education) staff development workshops and events throughout the academic year.
These are designed to help GP Clinical Placement Supervisors (CPS) and members of the practice team develop their teaching skills and knowledge of the MBChB course.
All PRiME Core: CPS, PRiME Advanced and PRiME Team sessions count towards the yearly training requirement of six hours for the practice that is written into your tutor contract, and they can be used for your GP appraisal. We do not charge you or your staff to attend these courses.

PRiME Core – New Clinical Placement Supervisor (CPS)
The PRiME Core: New Clinical Placement Supervisor workshop is a 2-hour session that covers all the basics of getting started in teaching undergraduate medical students.
It covers the basics of what is involved in being a Clinical Placement Supervisor, and how to teach medical students (using examples from your own experience of teaching and being taught). And also feedback (both giving and receiving) and assessment of students on placements, with some advice on what to teach in clinical practice.
Currently, we require at least one GP CPS at your practice to have attended this training before you take students, but all GPs and allied healthcare professionals who work directly with our students are encouraged to attend. Sessions consistently receive good feedback from attendees, and are relaxed and informative.
Upcoming sessions
PRiME Core New Clinical Placement Supervisor workshops will run throughout the year over Microsoft Teams.
For more information, a list of events and registration links, visit the PRiME website: New Clinical Placement Supervisor (CPS) workshop.
PRiME Advanced – Clinical Reasoning in Practice (with additional reference to remote consultations)
This 3-hour workshop is designed to increase your knowledge and skills to help your students with their Clinical Reasoning (CR). The intended learning outcomes of this workshop are to:
- Understand the thought processes that underlie Clinical Reasoning
- Describe CR learning in the Manchester MBChB Programme
- Promote the application of CR acknowledging influence of context
- Apply recognised methods to teach CR to help students learn and practice more effectively
- Provide evidence-based formative feedback to learners on their CR abilities

Promoting Inclusive Learning Environments
Creating inclusive learning environments for our undergraduates is vital to reduce any barriers or disadvantages that may impede student learning experiences and progression. This interactive three-hour session, developed by the MB ChB EDI Committee, focuses on how we can create inclusive learning environments that support positive student experiences and outcomes across a diverse undergraduate cohort. The session explores what constitutes a learning environment and our role to embed effective Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) practices so students feel safe, supported, and able to learn.
Participants will gain practical strategies to plan inclusive placements, respond to challenges such as micro-aggressions, and promote positive behaviours and cultural change within clinical teams and organisations, in line with professional and regulatory expectations.
This session will aim to support undergraduate supervisors to:
- Understand the context and importance of inclusive learning environments
- Explain key Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) concepts and terminology
- Gain insight into how EDI is embedded within the MB ChB curriculum, in particular, the Year 3 Active Bystander training
- Identify individual actions to support students, implement solutions, and positively influence personal and team behaviours
There are 3 CPD points for this workshop applied for through the Royal College of Physicians.

A Neuro-Affirmative Approach for Learners
Would you like to learn skills to work better with all different types of people, including those who think differently from you?
15 % or more of the population is neurodivergent and that number is likely to increase with more awareness and diagnostic services. This workshop will explore different types of cognitive processing, give the opportunity to reflect on how to support learners in your context, and explore how to apply reasonable adjustments.
The aims of this session are to:
- Discuss useful hints and tips on working with different types of cognitive processing
- Reflect on how to support those who share they are neurodivergent or who seem to have neurodivergent traits
- Apply reasonable adjustments in the context of a case study
- Identify tools for inclusivity in the learning environment and learn about signposting for further support
Sessions are being piloted to see if this is an area of interest to our teaching team. Please therefore sign up to one of the following workshops which will be delivered online using Teams, or face-to-face (same content).
- Wednesday 17 March 2027: 9:30am-12:30pm (Online via Microsoft Teams)
