Year 4 – Advancing Clinical Practice block

This is a continuous four-week block where the students spend 26 hours in general practice. These hours are flexible over 7am – 9pm, (Monday to Sunday, with the exception of Fridays).

Friday mornings are set aside for structured small-group teaching, which takes place away from the practice and Friday afternoon for students completing their online learning and TCD pre-learning.

Students will have an electronic log book in which they have activities that need to be signed off by you or colleagues at your practice.

What the placement involves

You will need to deliver a formal one to one induction to the student. This includes an orientation to the practice, discussion of the student’s learning objectives and a timetable for the four-week block.

Provide 4-5 GP sessions (16-20 hours) per week  where the student has ample opportunity to hot-seat consultations and (where possible) independently consult. Please ensure that all patient contacts with a student are contemporaneously reviewed by you or the supervising GP.

Provide 1-2 community clinical session (4-8 hours) per week where the student spends time with the practice nurse and other Allied Healthcare Professionals.

Provide a half session (2 hours) of flexible clinical learning (Practice meetings, tutorials, Clinical Competency Assessment (CCA) practice [formerly known as OSCEs]) where they are engaged in active clinical learning.

Sign off student activities (including patient presentations, core skills tasks and prescribing tasks) in their electronic log book.

Provide a one to one sign off meeting before the end of placement to review the student’s progress, sign off activities, attendance and engagement.

“All the staff were incredibly supportive and gave valuable feedback. There was a good variety of patients and presentations to see. Many opportunities to practice examinations and clinical skills such as BP measurements and bloods. The chance to have my own surgeries was some of the best experience I’ve had to learn to consult with patients independently while having the chance to consider my own differentials for each presentation. “
