Promoting Inclusive Learning Environments: A Deep Dive into EDI

Creating inclusive learning environments for our undergraduates is vital to reduce any barriers or disadvantages that may impede student learning experiences and progression.

This interactive two-hour session, developed by the MB ChB EDI Committee, focuses on how we can create inclusive learning environments that support positive student experiences and outcomes across a diverse undergraduate cohort. The session explores what constitutes a learning environment and our role to embed effective Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) practices so students feel safe, supported, and able to learn.

Participants will gain practical strategies to plan inclusive placements, respond to challenges such as micro-aggressions, and promote positive behaviours and cultural change within clinical teams and organisations, in line with professional and regulatory expectations.

This session will aim to support undergraduate supervisors to:

  • Understand the context and importance of inclusive learning environments
  • Understand what is meant by a learning environment in clinical education
  • Explain key Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) concepts and terminology
  • Understand micro-aggressions and how they can impact students’ learning experiences and attitudes
  • Gain insight into how EDI is embedded within the MB ChB curriculum, in particular, the Year 3 Active Bystander training
  • Identify individual actions to support students, implement solutions, and positively influence personal and team behaviours

There are 2 CPD points for this workshop applied for through the Royal College of Physicians.

A neuro-affirmative approach for learners

Would you like to learn skills to work better with all different types of people, including those who think differently from you?

15 % or more of the population is neurodivergent and that number is likely to increase with more awareness and diagnostic services. This workshop will explore different types of cognitive processing, give the opportunity to reflect on how to support learners in your context, and explore how to apply reasonable adjustments.

The aims of this session are to:

Discuss useful hints and tips on working with different types of cognitive processing
Reflect on how to support those who share they are neurodivergent or who seem to have neurodivergent traits.

Apply reasonable adjustments in the context of a case study.

Identify tools for inclusivity in the learning environment and learn about signposting for further support.

Sessions are being piloted to see if this is an area of interest to our teaching team. Please therefore sign up to one of the following workshops which will be delivered online using Teams, or F:F (same content).

Wednesday 1st April 1-4pm Salford Royal Hospital

or please register to join the same session, delivered on Teams:

Thursday 9th April 2026: 9am-12pm

Applied Knowledge Question Writing

This staff development opportunity is open to all those who teach or support teaching of the Manchester MB ChB. We also welcome allied healthcare professionals to participate.

This opportunity is your chance to also to contribute to the UK’s Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance question bank. The questions are of Short Best Answer ‘SBA’ multiple choice type. We will give you guidance to draft and review questions for submission to the national SBA item bank which is used by all medical schools within the UK.

If you are interested, please follow the steps below:

1. Please watch this short video outlining the basics of SBA writing by Professor David Kluth in Edinburgh, from the MSCAA, shared with permission and our thanks.

David’s presentation is about broad principles, so it is really important before you get started with writing your questions to also read and follow the MSCAA Question Writing Guide. We are grateful to MSCAA for allowing us to share this resource with you.

Ensuring your questions are written in accordance to both of these resources is important: if we don’t adhere to these rules, our questions don’t get into the bank. Please take a look at the Medical Schools Council (MSC) Assessment Alliance, which will take you to some examples of well written SBAs.

2. Write some questions! Once you have reviewed the material above, please write 6 questions and send them to us at medical.exams@manchester.ac.uk

Please use the subject header: PRIME: APPLIED KNOWLEDGE QUESTION WRITING SUBMISSION

3. Once you have submitted your questions, you will then be invited to attend an Item Review workshop where you will have an opportunity to review and revise questions with peers. This process helps ensure that they are as good as we can make them before we then submit them to the national bank where they will undergo further review. You will have the satisfaction of contributing, plus a certificate of attendance at this workshop.
