MFT hub and spoke model: driving learning forward

The Professional Education and Development (PED) Team sits within Corporate Services at Manchester University Foundation Trust (MFT) and provides undergraduate and postgraduate education for nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals (NMAHPs).

The PED Team’s ethos is grounded in a humanising ‘philosophy of care’ model, putting the needs of the learner and ultimately the patient at the centre of our work. Education enables us to ensure that our patients have access to the latest high-quality care, to attract the best staff, and in turn to deliver the best outcomes for patients.

The PED Team was developed as a hub learning environment in December 2020. This new and innovative placement enables the learner to gain a deep understanding of what an MFT-educator career pathway looks like, giving the learner valuable insight into the skills, attributes and values of the educators in the Trust.

The hub and spoke model has been co-developed by the education team and learners and colleagues in practice and was piloted during the first PEDT hub placement. This is a new, exciting way of expanding placement capacity and enhancing the learning experience. The model unlocks the potential of previously under-utilised spoke and embeds the principles of the GM synergy model.
