Access the facility

See general information on costs and charges, submission requirements and turnaround times.

If you would like to access the facility for use in your research the first step is to get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.

If you are from an institution outside The University of Manchester or working in industry, find out more about external access.

Facility charges

External clients

Charge rates for external academic or commercial work are available on request.

Internal clients

Charging for use of the Genomic Technologies Core Facility (GTCF) is implemented using the PPMS Core Facilities management system.

University of Manchester samples that have not been specifically funded on a grant may be eligible for Faculty subsidy, especially if the work is performed by a graduate student. Please contact us for details.

All current University of Manchester rates are also available on the Faculty intranet pages (login required).

Project costs

Total costs for projects or groups of samples are built up from the facility charges.

The analysis charges are per hour of analysis with a standard analysis taking one hour.
Complicated proteomics samples may require longer runs and so the charges are scaled.

An example formula for calculating costs is as follows:

Costs = (analysis charge rate x number of samples per replicate x run length (hours) x number of replicates x number of conditions) + (advanced analysis rate x number days facility support required).

It is highly recommended that all costings for work to be performed in the facility are discussed with facility staff before being provided to a third party.

Sample submission requirements

All samples should be submitted by pre-arrangement only.

In-gel digestion, basic phospho mapping and basic proteomics service support samples are accepted once a week on Wednesday between 9.30am and 10.30am.

Intact mass service support samples are accepted on an ad hoc basis by pre-arrangement.

Analysis-only samples should be submitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11am and midday unless by prior arrangements.

Turnaround times

All service support samples are turned around within six weeks unless affected by factors outside our control, such as instrument breakdown.

You will be informed of any delays to your samples.

Analysis-only samples are generally performed within one week.

Times for post-doc level support work will be as advised by the relevant member of staff.
