ID LIVER Chief Investigator
Neil was the original Chief Investigator of ID LIVER. He is now Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Medicine and Health at the University of Birmingham and retains his contact with the ID LIVER research programme as Honorary Professor at the The University of Manchester.
Professor Karen Piper Hanley
Principle Investigator
Karen is Professor of Molecular Medicine and Head of Division, Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology at the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, The University of Manchester. Her research focuses on how scarring (or fibrosis) drives liver disease to translate basic biological understanding through to human studies.
Dr Varinder Athwal
Principal Investigator
Varinder is a Consultant Hepatologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Manchester. He is Principal Investigator and clinical lead for the research programme.
Oliver Street
Programme Manager
Oliver is Programme Manager in the liver research programme and is responsible for the day-to-day operations and helping the team to achieve its objectives. With expertise in healthcare management, he ensures the efficient delivery of the programme’s strategic goals.
Dr Deepankar Gahloth
Project Manager
Deepankar is Project Manager in the liver research programme. His expertise in project management and healthcare research is instrumental in driving the programme forward. He effectively manages a diverse portfolio of projects, ensuring successful outcomes while working across multidisciplinary teams.
Dr Stephanie Landi
Clinic Research Fellow
Stephanie is a Clinical Research Fellow and contributes to liver disease research aimed at improving early detection of liver disease, its progression and management. She combines clinical expertise with innovative research to make significant strides in the field of hepatology.
Dr Christopher Mysko
Clinical Research Fellow
Christopher is a Clinical Research Fellow working on an ambitious project to detect liver cancer in earlier, treatable stages. He works with the multidisciplinary team on the design and implementation of new methodologies for hepatocellular carcinoma detection.
Dr Elliot Jokl
Research Associate
Elliot is a Research Associate working in Professor Piper Hanley’s lab to identify potential biomarkers for early liver disease using the lab’s expertise in modelling fibrosis. He works with Stephanie and Christopher to quantify these markers in patient serum to see if they are useful indicators of liver disease risk.
