About the MATREP study
The MATREP study involves a series of interviews with families, NHS staff and national programme leads.
Understanding parents’ and families’ experiences
We will carry out one-to-one interviews with 20 families from different backgrounds on their experiences of the reviews/investigations, including the emotional and financial costs.
Once parent and family interviews have been completed and analysed, we will use our findings to design a national survey to ask questions about experiences of the reviews/investigations, hearing from people across England with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Understanding NHS staff experiences
We will be doing one-to-one interviews with staff leading the reviews/investigations from seven NHS maternity units in England. We want to understand staff experiences of using the Perinatal Mortality Review Tool (PMRT) review tool and participating in Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigations (MNSI) investigations, and their perspective on the benefits, progress, and costs of these processes.

- NHS staff responsible for the use and monitoring of HSIB/MNSI and/or PMRT reviews within a maternity service (PDF)
- Senior NHS staff members responsible for the HSIB/MNSI and/or PMRT within a maternity service (PDF)
Understanding national and area leadership in the review and investigation process
Finally, we are also going to interview between eight and ten national programme leads with experiences of service improvement, and challenges to the work and outcomes, to understand the implementation and outcomes of using the PMRT and/or MNSI investigations.
