How do parents or families participate in this study?

We have launched an online survey to enable parents and family members to support the study.

If your baby was harmed during labour, or died after 22 weeks of pregnancy, during labour, or within the first 4 weeks of life, and you had a review or investigation after this, and you are ready to complete this survey about your experience, you may be eligible to take part.

We are investigating events that occurred any time from January 2019 in England.

Watch a video featuring bereaved parents Keji and Charlotte, who explain why the survey is taking place and why it is important for parents and family members to complete it.

Who can take part?

Parents and families that can take part are:

  • Those who have experienced baby loss, a baby with brain injury or a maternal death from 1 January 2019. This is because the programmes under evaluation were fully operational from 1 January 2019.
  • Those who are able to read and speak English.
  • Those able to provide informed consent.
  • Those with a completed HSIB/MNSI investigation or PMRT review.

Families that will not be able to take part, and why:

  • Those who have significant cognitive disability. This is because these potential participants would not be able to give informed consent by themselves.
  • Those who have current severe mental illness and consider themselves to be too unwell to participate in this present study.
  • Those who feel themselves to be too distressed to participate in the study. This is because significant distress may affect participant choice and autonomy. They may feel that the costs of research participation to them may outweigh any benefits.
  • Those who are unable to read or speak English. This is because we do not have the required funding for translation services that would ensure that participant understanding of the study and study participation, and so participant choice, is maintained.
  • Those who feel unable to provide informed consent.
